Jeffrey Thomas Lucas Sr., 46 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa passed away at 11:22 p.m. July 6, 2012 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Jeff was born October 5, 1965 in Fort Madison, Iowa to Billy O. and Mary Beth (Niggemeyer) Lucas.
Jeff graduated in 1984 from Fort Madison High School, and then graduated in 1988 from Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, Mo. with a BS in Industrial Science, majoring in Drafting and Design. He worked as a Designer at Heatilator Fireplaces and Design Engineer at CNH (Case New Holland) for 15 years completing design projects for Dozers, Backhoes, Forklifts, and Skid Steers.
Jeff married the Love of his life Jill (Schrock) Lucas June 21, 1991 in Fort Madison. Together they raised four children: Jera (Marshall) Smutney, of Iowa City, Iowa; Jerran Marshall, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Jeffrey Lucas Jr., of Ames, Iowa; and Jeffan Lucas of Fort Madison, Iowa, five granddaughters: Jenica, Jyliyah, Edlicia, and Eveonna, all of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dacee, of Fort Madison, Iowa.
Jeff was a longtime supporter and volunteer of the Boy Scouts in the River Valley District of the Mississippi Valley Council. He touched many lives as he served as a Den Leader and Cubmaster of Pack 65, he was a re-founder and Scoutmaster of Troop 65. He served in several other positions, including Cub Day Camp Director, Yukon and Klondike Staff, Unit Commissioner, Training Chair and District Commissioner. He led the pack, troop, and district in popcorn sells for many years and this year he had top sells for the council. He enjoyed teaching, learning and doing his best.
He earned Bachelor, Masters, and Post Grad Degrees in Commissioner Science. Jeff was a proud member of the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk Honor Society and the Black Hawk Lodge 67, Order of the Arrow. In 2005, he completed Wood Badge Training, earned the Distinguished Commissioner Knot, and was awarded the District Award of Merit. In 2011 Jeff was honored with the Silver Beaver Award.
He was past president of Bass Anglers Association, Pool 19. He was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include his Loving wife of 21 years Jill; one daughter, Jera (husband Ed) Smutney; three sons: Jerran (wife Heidi) Marshall, Jeffrey Lucas Jr. (girlfriend Brooke), and Jeffan Lucas (girlfriend Kaci); and his dog “Luke”; five granddaughters: Jenica, Jyliyah, Eveonna, Edlicia and Dacee; two grandsons, Dason and Layke; his mother, Mary Beth (step-father Tom) Fedler of West Point, Iowa; brother, Mark Lucas (wife Val) of Kingsford Heights, Indiana; one sister, Courtney Lucas of Marceline, Missouri; mother-in-law, Edith Schrock; four nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and all the Schrock Family. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy O. Lucas; grandparents, Albert and Eleanor Niggemeyer and Vincent and Madelyn “Pat” Lucas; father-in-law, Robert Schrock; and one daughter, Jenica Joan Marshall.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 7:00 pm Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Dan Doolan, officiating. Burial will be at Apostolic Christian Cemetery, rural Oakville, Iowa. Jeff requested all “Scouters” be in Class “A” Uniform. A memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
