Alan "Abe" Drew Washburn, 86 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 12:30 am Wednesday September 23, 2015 at The Madison, Fort Madison, Iowa. Abe was born November 4, 1928 at Edgely, North Dakota, a son of Otis and Wilma (Drew) Washburn. On July 14, 1990, he married Cozette Lay.
He was a 1947 graduate of New London High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked most of his adult life as a farmer and salvage dealer. He also owned and operated Washburn Fabrics in Wever, Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion Post 668 of West Point and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 7641 of New London. Abe enjoyed playing cards and spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Cozette Lay, of Fort Madison, Iowa; step-children: Henry (wife Julie) Howell, of Keokuk, Iowa; Rhonda Watson (Kevin Smith), of Fort Madison, Iowa; Darla (husband Daniel) Dunbar, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one sister, Sharon (husband Vernell) Gookin, of Postville, Iowa; several grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Roy Washburn.
His family will greet friends during visitation from 12:00 (noon) to 1:00 pm Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. Funeral Services will follow and begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home, with Dan Buck officiating. Burial with full military rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
