Obituary

Anne Garland Sheaffer, 94, of Fort Madison, Iowa died Sunday morning, July 10, 2016 at The Madison in Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was born on July 6, 1922 in Bowling Green, Virginia to Willlard Werth and Anne Garland Dillard Green. She graduated from Caroline County High School with her three best friends Ann, Nancy and Jean. She continued her education at Westhampton College, now the University of Richmond, where she graduated in 1944.

She met her husband Walter A. Sheaffer II when she was a junior in college and he was stationed at Fort A.P. Hill with the U.S Army, near Bowling Green VA. After a brief courtship and his activation during the war they were married on January 20, 1945 in Bowling Green.

After the war they returned to Fort Madison where they made their home for the next 72 years.

She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she served on the altar guild. As a child she was a member of the Every Day Daredevil Club. She was formerly active with the following groups: Daughters of the American Revolution, P.E.O., Kings Daughters, and the Fort Madison Area Art Association. She was an avid bridge player and will be missed by her regular foursome. She also enjoyed many years of golfing, tennis, fishing, reading and traveling.

Anne Garland Sheaffer is survived by her four children: Garland Sheaffer Remsen (John), Leslie Sheaffer Dieterich (Bob), Craig Royer Sheaffer II, Elizabeth Sheaffer Mohr (Rick): seven grandchildren: Eric and Kathy Remsen, Craig Remsen, Daniel and Julie Remsen, Jeremy and Amy Sheaffer, Anne Sheaffer, Walter Sheaffer III, and Amber Gibson. She is also survived by six great grandchildren: James, Ansley, Finley, Genevieve, John Walter, and Anna. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Cary F. Green and Dillard Green, and one nephew Cary F. Green Jr.

The body of Anne Garland Sheaffer has been cremated. The family will meet friends from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m Thursday, August 11, 2016 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Fort Madison. A private family burial will be held after the service. A memorial has been established in her name for the St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Contributions may be made at the church or at Barr Memorial chapel.
