Barbara Dunlap Machen, 98 yrs., of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 11:20 am Friday May 20, 2011 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison , Iowa. She was born June 1, 1912 in Jacksonville, Illinois, the daughter of Edward M. and Bess M. (Barr) Dunlap. On June 11, 1938, she married Clyde Richard Machen in Jacksonville, Illinois. He preceded her in death May 12, 1993.
She was a graduate of Illinois College. She had been a resident of Ft. Madison since 1959. She taught high school French from 1935 - 1938 in Versailles, Illinois. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and of Rebecca Circle of the First United Methodist Women. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter BS, National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees, and the Senior Citizens Club of Fort Madison. She was an avid bridge player and a die hard Cub fan.
She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Neal (Martha Jane) Humphrey, Overland Park, Kansas and Mrs. Robert (Marilyn Ann) Bever, Fort Madison, Iowa; five grandchildren: Kimberly Newman, Brian Humphrey, Rick Humphrey, Rochelle Sutcliffe, and Bruce Bever; seven great grandchildren: Brandon Humphrey, Jackie Humphrey, Robbie Newman, Danielle Newman, Emily Humphrey, Joe Humphrey, and Benjamin Humphrey; and one great great granddaughter, Brookelynne Humphrey. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Family will greet friends from 9:30 - 10:30 am Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. Funeral services will follow and be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Reverend John Simpson officiating. Burial will be held at Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville, Illinois. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
