Bernice Meyer, 86 years old, of Donnellson, Iowa, died at 1:00 pm, Saturday January 12, 2013. She was born on January 26, 1926 in Charleston, Iowa, the daughter of William and Loretta Bentzinger. She married Arthur H. Meyer Jr. on July 29, 1951 in Donnellson, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1981.
She attended Donnellson High School, graduating in 1943. She also graduated in 1980 from Bill Hill's College of Hair Design.
For 51 years, she was an organist for various churches in Donnellson, Franklin, and Denmark. She was a choir director, piano teacher, and hair stylist. She, along with her late husband, owned and operated Meyer Grocery for 16 years, and also owned a farm. Before that, she was a bookkeeper for Sheaffer Pen Company, and Ortho.
She was a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Through the years, Bernice planned many unique programs for organizations. The most well known one was the Mid-Lee Singspiration, which she started, and planned for 19 years.
Her passions in life were her family, music, program planning, flowers and the color pink.
She is survived by her daughter, Marlene Meyer, of Tempe, Arizona; a son, Marvin (wife Nancy) Meyer, of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Clayton Whitmarsh, of Fort Madison, Iowa and many nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two grandcats.
Friends may call after 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 401 Maple Street, Donnellson, Iowa, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Tuesday evening. Pre-service music recorded by Bernice and friends will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 401 Maple Street, Donnellson with a celebration of her life to follow. Reverend Robert Koepcke will officiate. Burial will be in the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson, Iowa. A memorial has been established for the Donnellson Library and St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
