Betty Lou (Cameron) Riter Van Ausdall, 80 years, of Fort Madison and formerly of Montrose, Iowa, died of cancer Saturday November 26, 2011 at her home. She was born July 31, 1931 in Happy Hollow in Fort Madison, a daughter of William (Red) Cameron and Utha B. (Withrow) Cameron. On July 9, 1949 she married John Riter at Fort Madison. He preceded her in death on September 15, 1997. On April 28, 2000 she married Everett Van Ausdall at the St. Barnabas Church in Montrose. He survives.
Betty was a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Fort Madison. She was a mother and housewife, and was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montrose. Betty found great enjoyment from all the faithful dogs she had over the years. She enjoyed her large family and dining out. She served one term on the Fort Madison School Board.
In addition to her husband Everett, she is survived by four daughters, Susan Gabrielson Van Wye, of Iowa City, Iowa; Sally (husband Joseph) Shepardson, of North Liberty, Iowa; Sonya (husband Bill) Kester of Fort Madison; and Sheila Weiss, of Burlington, Iowa; one step-son, Kyle (wife Dawn) Van Ausdall, of Donnellson, Iowa; one sister, Donna (husband Ken) Campbell, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two sisters-in-law, Lois Lamb Cameron, of St. Augustine, Florida; and Helen Riter Miller, of Elvaston, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Dick Riter, of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Bianca Dyar, of South Carolina; Bridget Dusek, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; John Paul Gabrielson, of Iowa City; and Kayla Jacobs, Jared Kester, and Anna Kester all of Fort Madison; seven great grandchildren, Brianna, Ethan, and Evan Dyar, of South Carolina; Latham and Blake Gabrielson, of Iowa City; and Calum and Trevor Dusek, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In addition to her first husband John Riter, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Steve Riter, of Florida; two daughters in infancy, Sandra and Elizabeth Riter; one sister, Mary Cameron Gaule, of Odessa, Texas; and one brother, Hugh D. Cameron, of St. Augustine Florida.
Per Betty's wishes her body has been cremated. Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday May 29, 2012 at the Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Iowa. Sister Peggy Duffy will officiate. A memorial has been established for P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter, contributions may be left with and sent to the Barr Memorial Chapel, 1919 Avenue F, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627. Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison has handled her cremation and is in charge of services.
