Carroll William "Curly" Sprenger, 88 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 7:00 pm Wednesday October 19, 2011 at the Fort Madison Health Center, Fort Madison, Iowa.
Curly was born October 13, 1923 at home near Donnellson, Iowa, a son of Henry William and Hilda Barbara (Galle) Sprenger. He had ten brothers and sisters and was raised on a farm near Donnellson, Iowa. Curly married Ida Louise Schumaker on April 17, 1948 at Donnellson, Iowa. They were married 63 years! He worked as an Instrument Mechanic for Dupont, retiring after 37 years of service. In his younger days, Curly enjoyed roller skating. He was an advisor for Junior Achievement, Campfire Girls volunteer board member, and a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He was a gunsmith and loved woodworking. Curly was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II. He was a member of the Fort Madison V.F.W. and was an active member of the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard. He was instrumental in the development of the Fort Madison Veterans Memorial at Riverview Park.
He was survived by his wife, Ida Sprenger, of Fort Madison, Iowa; three daughters: Carol (husband Jim) Kuhlmeier, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Dee (husband Greg) Liddle, of Wever, Iowa; and Rebecca (husband Don) Sanders, of West Point, Iowa; two brothers: Ray (wife Bonnie) Sprenger, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Robert (wife Sue) Sprenger, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; seven sisters: Ruth Carter, of Frenchtown, Montana; Wilma Stevens, of Burlington, Iowa; Fern Wagle, of Sturgis, Michigan; Martha (husband Lloyd) Sheneman, Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania; Dorothy Sprenger, of Boone, Iowa; Nancy Stuekerjuergen, of West Point, Iowa; and Isla Stuetelberg, of Atlantic, Iowa; five grandchildren: Deborah Wright, Tammy Brown, Kelly Sanders, Tracy Sanders and Stanley Sanders, four great grandchildren: Kaitlin Brown, Erica Wright, Kennedy Brown and David Wright, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter Sprenger.
Family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday October 23, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel,
Fort Madison, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday October 24, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Cheryl Simpson officiating. Burial at Oakland Cemetery, Soldiers Circle, Fort Madison, Iowa, with full military rites conducted by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for the Soldiers Circle Fund, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
