Cecilia Agnes Menke, 91 yrs., of West Point, Iowa died at 2:05 pm Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa. She was born December 13, 1919 at West Point, Iowa, a daughter of Theodore and Theresa (Pieper) Fedler. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1938. On January 2, 1941, she married Lawrence J. Menke at the St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church at West Point, Iowa. They made their home on a farm west of St. Paul, where she helped her husband farm and raise her family. She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, St. Paul, where she served as an Eucharist minister for years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Ann's Circle of Daughters of Isabella, and the West Point Home and Garden Club. She was also a member and Past President of American Legion Auxiliary and Past Chairman of Lee County Farm Bureau Women. She enjoyed quilting, first with a group in Houghton and later with the St. James Quilters. She was one of the original quilters of the St. James club, which started in 1980. She made many quilts, comforters and afghans for her family. She enjoyed playing cards, and was a member of Feathers and Canasta Card Clubs.
She is survived by five sons: Joseph (wife Marsha) Menke, of Davenport, Iowa; Robert (wife Trudy) Menke,of Wilton, Iowa; Paul (wife Diana) Menke, of Fort Madison, Iowa; John Menke, of Mt. Union, Iowa; Bernard (wife Mary Jo) Menke, of Davenport, Iowa; three daughters: Theresa Boulton, of Burlington, Iowa; Barbara (husband Jerry) Johnson, of Houghton, Iowa; and Rose Ogier, of Houghton, Iowa; one brother, Joseph (wife Lorene) Fedler, of West Point, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Thomas Menke, brothers: Raymond, Edmund, Louis, James, and Ben "BJ"; one sister: Louise Hierstein, one infant sister and one great grandson.
Friends may call after 2:30 pm Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, West Point, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday evening at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, with a Christian Wake Service being held at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the St. James the Less Church, St. Paul, Iowa with Reverend Dennis Hoffman, as celebrant. Burial will be at the St. James Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Holy Trinity Catholic Schools and St. James the Less Church, contributions may be made at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home or at the church on the day of the service.
