Charles Edward Underwood, 85 years, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 10:15 pm Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Hallmar of the Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was born September 9, 1929 at Denver, Colorado, the only child of Albert Harrell and Oleda Emmeline (Bush) Underwood. On February 5, 1955, he married Anna Marie Gardner in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Mr. Underwood spent most of his life in Fort Madison and was a 1948 graduate of Fort Madison High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, He served as a field medic during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star. For nearly 30 years, he worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1989. He was a member and Deacon of the First Christian Church. He enjoyed watching sports and was an Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Underwood, of Cedar Rapids, two sons, Mark Underwood, of Nevada, Iowa and Edward (Ginny) Underwood, of Winfield, Illinois; three daughters: Connie Williams, of Iowa; Susan Shultz, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Amy Saldeen, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Michael Underwood.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 am Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services, Fort Madison. A funeral service will follow and be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services, Fort Madison, Iowa with Reverend John Simpson officiating. Burial with full military rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. A memorial has been established, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services.
