Obituary

A memorial service for Craig Morton, 89 yrs., of Fort Madison, Iowa who died at 5:40 pm Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 2710 West Avenue, Burlington, Iowa. A memorial has been established for the Denmark Fire and Rescue and the Calvary Baptist Church.

Craig Morton, currently 89 yrs., of Fort Madison, Iowa, died at 5:40 pm Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born May 21, 1921 at rural Fort Madison, Iowa, a son of Charles Garrison and Martha Esther (Lauther) Morton. On May 31, 1941, he married Dorothy Edith Mecklenburg at Denmark, Iowa. He was a 1938 graduate of Denmark Academy High School. He was a livestock and general farmer and a builder. Over their nearly 70 years of married life together, Craig and his wife, Dorothy, were faithful members of three churches in southeast Iowa: The Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ at Denmark, The Grace Bible Church at Wever, and most recently, the Calvary Baptist Church at Burlington. For many years, Craig served as a church board member and Sunday School Teacher, and he was volunteer worker and speaker with the Gideons Bible Ministry. In the past he served on the Sawyer School Board, the Denmark Academy Scholarship Committee and Board, the Fairview Cemetery Association Board, and Lee County Historical Society. He was an inventor who built many gadgets and machines in his farm shop, for which he received several awards from Farm Magazines and at least one patent. After retiring from farming, Craig tended a large vegetable garden, and he blessed many people with the produce that he raised.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. Morton; four sons: Harley (wife Janet) Morton, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Kevin (wife Carolyn) Morton, of Clyde, Ohio; Russell (wife Vicki) Morton, of Lancaster, Missouri; and Wesley Morton, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one sister, Elsie (husband Ivan) Roth, of Donnellson, Iowa; six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Elizabeth Webb and one brother Dale Morton.
Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. Services will be held at a later date.
