Donald Elmer Honadel, 83 yrs, of Montrose, Iowa died at 10:05 am Sunday September 7, 2014 at the Montrose Health Center, Montrose, Iowa.
He was born January 2, 1931 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a son of John and Alinda (Lowenberg) Honadel. On July 17, 1955, he married Carol Smoot at Denmark, Iowa.
He was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a 1948 graduate of the Fort Madison High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving in the Korean War. He worked as a electrician for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 45 years of service. He was a 50 year member of the Stella Masonic Lodge #440, Joppa Masonic Lodge #136, and Claypoole Masonic Lodge #13 AF & AM. He was a member of the NRA and the Montrose Presbyterian Church. He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Honadel, of Fort Madison, Iowa; two sons: Tal Honadel, of Eagle River, Alaska; Kyle (wife Robin) Honadel, of Overland Park, Kansas; one brother, Jerry (wife Marcella) Honadel, of Fort Madison, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jacob and Jessica; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
His family will greet friends from 6:00 - 7:30 pm Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, where a Masonic Service conducted by the Fort Madison Masonic Lodge #13 and Joppa Masonic Lodge #136 AF & AM will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday evening. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Montrose Presbyterian Church, Montrose. Pastor Bill Willis will officiate. Burial with full military rites will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. A memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
