Emil A. Roewert, 89 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 6:00 pm Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the Montrose Health Center, Montrose, Iowa. He was born September 12, 1921 at Norfolk, Nebraska, a son of Alvin and Marie (Pittack) Roewert. On March 5, 1948, he married Joan Douglas at Los Angeles, California.
He has been a Fort Madison resident since 1964 where he had been employed at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course as a golf professional and gold course superintendent, retiring December 1988. He had been employed in similar positions in Osage, Perry, Fairfield, and Shenandoah, Iowa prior to coming to Fort Madison. He was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion since 1945. He was a life member of the Professional Golfers Association and became a member of the Half Century Club in 1999. He was elected president of the Iowa PGA Section from 1966- 69 and was named Iowa Golf Professional Golfer of the year on two separate occasions. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, in the Army's 97th Infantry Division in Europe receiving two battle stars. He also served six months in the army of occupation of Japan beginning in August 1945.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Roewert, of Fort Madison, Iowa and one daughter, Eileen Roewert, of Clarence, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.
The family will meet friends from 9:30 - 10:30 am Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2121 Ave A, Fort Madison. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Fort Madison. Reverend Steve Rasmussen will officiate. Burial will be at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. Military rites at graveside will be conducted by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established for Our Savior Lutheran Church, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
