Gena Mae Layer, 49 years, of Burlington, Iowa died at 5:30 pm Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, after a long battle with breast and bone cancer. She was born January 25, 1964 at Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Virginia (Congdon) Layer.
She was a lifelong resident of the area. She worked at several factories including the Burlington Basket Factory and Vista Bakery. She also worked at the Pzazz. She enjoyed spending time with her family, making crafts and jewelry, going to yard sales, her cats, and was known for always helping those in need.
She is survived by her mother, Virginia Layer, of Burlington, Iowa; her father, Thomas Layer, of Little Rock, Arkansas; one son, Theron Layer, of Burlington, Iowa; maternal grandmother, Doris Congdon, of Wever, Iowa; aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, paternal grandparents, and one uncle.
Her body has been cremated. Her family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 am Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. Pastor Kendal Adams will officiate. Burial of her cremated remains will be at a later date at the Claypoole Cemetery, rural Wever, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established, and contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.
