Gregory Bell Haney, 94, of Wever, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 20, 2021 at his home. Greg was born November 1, 1926 in Sioux City, Iowa, a son of James David and Gladys (Bell) Haney.
Greg was a graduate of South High in South Omaha, Nebraska. Greg is a WWII Veteran and volunteered for the Army at age 18, signing up at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas. He completed Basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma Field Artillery Replacement Center, advanced field artillery training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and additional training at Camp Picket, Virginia and Camp Kilmer, New Jersey.
Greg was transported by troop ship to at LaHarve, France and served as a Military Policeman in Marberg, Germany and Castle, Germany. He received an honorable discharge at Fort Dix, NJ. in October of 1946. Greg took up boxing in the Army and went on to box Golden Glove for a time after the military. Greg's military experience is recorded and documented in the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center.
After returning to Papillion, NE after the war a mutual friend introduced Greg to Jeannine Hayes. They were married on February 19, 1949 and were married for 72 years.
After his time in the military, he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in Business Administration. Greg was able to attend college utilizing the GI Bill. In addition, he studied at the University of Chicago and at the University of Missouri. Greg had a 39-year career at Armour & Company starting in Omaha working in engineered labor standards. Greg was promoted to Quality Control Manager at Armour's South St. Paul, Minnesota plant. Greg was then promoted to Director of Quality Control of the meat canning division of Armour-Dial at their Corporate Headquarters in downtown Chicago. In the early 70's, Greg accepted the challenge of developing and starting up Armour-Dial's state of the art production facility which is still operating in Fort Madison. Greg made numerous trips to several European countries to acquire production machinery for the new plant. Jeannine accompanied Greg on several of those trips and flew on the Concord twice. With Jeannine accompanying him on one of the trips, an engine failed on the Concord and they were diverted to Montreal, Canada for an emergency landing. After the successful start of the new world class plant, Greg became the National Process Control Engineer for Armour-Dial. In this role Greg became active in the National Meat Canners Association and developed relationships with leaders of other companies he did business with. Owners of these companies took a liking to Greg and involved him in many of their corporate events, many times flying on their corporate jets. Greg played in Pro-Am tournaments with Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and others. Pictures with these golf legends are hung in his den. Greg made many life lasting friendships in his career at Armour and retired in 1989.
After retiring, Greg volunteered as the Manager of the Fort Madison Country Club. Greg loved living in Fort Madison and spent his free time playing golf. His friends called him "Long Ball". He and Jeannine traveled the country in their motorhome, towing their Jeep behind. Their favorite destination was South Padre Island, TX where they wintered for several years. Greg said they spent the best days of their life there.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannine; three children: Derelle Haney (Kyle Crocker) of Bemidji, Minnesota; Curt Haney (Kathleen Nelson) of Seattle, Washington; and Jeff (Therese) Haney of Hudson, Wisconsin; two siblings, Sharon Winther of Norfolk, Nebraska and David (Jayne) Haney of Papillion, Nebraska; six granddaughters: Katie Haney (Kamee Mam), Kimmy (Michael) Barrie, Holly Haney, Jenny (Jared) Haan, Megan Haney and Rita Haney; one great grandson Miles; Mia and Marika Nelson; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, James and Joan.
Greg's family will greet friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A memorial service will follow and begin at 11:00 am Wednesday. May 26, 2021 at the funeral home with Pastor Dave Poland officiating. Burial and military rites will be at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for the Fort Madison Community Hospital Foundation, contributions may be made directly to Barr Memorial Chapel, 1919 Avenue F, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627. Barr Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the Haney family. A recording of the memorial service will be added to Greg's obituary on the Barr Memorial Chapel website following the memorial service.
