Helen "Pat" (nee Barbre) Lodwick died on July 16, 2014 at age 92. She was born on June 26, 1922 in Baltimore MD, the daughter of the late Clarence and Helen (nee Wescott) Barbre and the sister of the late Robert W. Barbre. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Seeley G. Lodwick.
Pat is survived by her daughters Barbara (Edwin) Rossow, Margery (Jerry) Tuttle, and Helen (Gary) Gerber. She leaves behind four grandchildren Christopher (Amanda) Brown, Latitia Brown, J. Eli Tuttle, Benjamin Tuttle and a great-grandson Seeley G. Brown. She was a loving aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Pat graduated from Webster Groves High School, Webster Groves MO in 1940 and from Iowa State College in 1944 with a B.S. degree and a major in applied art and home economics education. While at Iowa State, she held leadership positions in Mortar Board, Delta Delta Delta, and Union Board.
She had a career as a teacher and taught a wide variety of subjects, including art, sewing and clothing construction, biology, general science, English and history. She taught at Kirkwood Junior High School, Kirkwood MO; Oak Street Junior High School, Burlington IA; and Ft. Madison High School, Ft. Madison IA.
Pat was an active participant in these clubs and organizations: P.E.O. (president of chapters in Ft. Madison IA and Washington D.C. and served as chair of the annual convention in Washington D.C.); Monday Afternoon Study Club, Ft. Madison IA; The White House, Washington D.C. (volunteer for 10 years); Independent Agency Women, Washington D.C. (president); Welcome to Washington, Washington D.C. (chair of History and Culture Division); Lee County Farm Bureau Women's Committee (president); and Carousel Nursery School, Ft. Madison IA (president of executive board). Pat was "hostess extraordinaire," making people in her midst feel comfortable and always adding an unexpected flair to any event. She was a life-long learner and challenged herself to expand her interests in art, music, literature, and travel. Her creative sparkle and wit was a breath of fresh air.
A reception celebrating Pat's life will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Ivy Downtown, 622 7th Street in Ft. Madison (319-372-9939). Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Iowa Wesleyan College, 601 N. Main Street, Mt. Pleasant IA 52641.
