James Murlin Westphal 1945 - 2025
James "Jim" Murlin Westphal, born on May 8, 1945, in Algona, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home in Burlington, Iowa, on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 79 years old.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Radioman from 1963 to 1969, completing two tours in Vietnam. His dedication and service exemplified his courageous spirit and unwavering commitment.
A graduate of Mediapolis High School in 1963, Jim went on to enjoy a fulfilling career with GE as an Electrical Draftsman, retiring in 2007. Beyond his professional career, he pursued his lifelong passion for music. Jim taught guitar lessons to countless aspiring musicians and was a cherished member of several local bands, including Big River Six and Route 61.
Jim also dedicated his time to serving others as Vice President of the Burlington Senior Center from 2020 to 2025, always striving to support and uplift his community.
Jim was a devoted father to his daughters, Krista Warren of Council Bluffs, IA, and Kathryn Westphal of Superior, CO. He was a proud grandfather to Nick Burgett of Bellevue, NE, and Zack and Hannah Burgett of Council Bluffs, IA, and a loving great-grandfather to Madilyn, Lillian, and Penelope Burgett. His siblings, Janette and Robert Siegel of West Burlington, IA, and Jonelle Derry of Burlington, IA, will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murlin Ivan and Francis Julia Westphal.
Jim's gentle spirit, musical talent, and unwavering love will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace, knowing he made the world a kinder place.
