Janet “Jane” Lewella Fisher, 97 years, of Wapello, Iowa and formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died Monday, October 5, 2026. She was born December 2, 1928 at Red Oak, Iowa, a daughter of Gerald Garrett and Irene “Gail” (Covert) Hendershot. She first married Clifford Murphy in Centerville, Iowa, they had three children: Susan, Michael, and Patrick. They later divorced. On June 21, 1975, she married Lauren J. Fisher Sr. at Fort Madison. He preceded her in death October 5, 2023.
Jane graduated from the Centerville High School at the age of sixteen, and then helped raised her siblings. She was a member of the hospital auxiliary in Centerville. She eventually moved to Fort Madison, where she worked as a pharmacy assistant, and later at the Lou Maurice Dress Shop. She played cards in a bridge club, and was a Cub Scout leader. After moving to Muscatine, she worked at the Muscatine Hospital, as a pharmacy assistant and then as the personal secretary to the materials management department. For more than 15 years, she and Lauren were the managers of the Royel Motel in Wapello, Iowa. She was a member of the Musserville Methodist Church, Muscatine. In past years, she loved to play croquet and scrabble with her sisters. In more recent years, she enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye football, the squirrels in her yard, taking trips to the casino, bingo, doing puzzles and word search.
She is survived by her children, Susan (John) Van Pelt of Burlington, Iowa and Patrick (Gladys) Murphy of Wapello, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Debbie Murphy of Fort Madison, Iowa; step-children: Laurie (Rory) Marshall of Wilton, Iowa, Linda (John) Silva, Bruce Fisher and Lauren Fisher, Jr., all of Muscatine, Iowa; four grandchildren: Miranda, Anna, Jason and Leann; nine great grandchildren: Emma, Lydia, Eliza, Gus, Caroline, Hannah, Carter, Bailey and Aubrey; four great-great grandchildren: Henry, Millie Kate, Deklan, and Ella Jean; nine step-grandchildren, sixteen step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great grandchild; siblings, Jack Hendershot of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Nancy Ryan of Newton, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ella Hendershot of Newton, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Ed Shirley of Centerville, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lauren Sr., son Michael “Mike” Murphy, granddaughter LeAnn, great grandson Jackson, step-grandchild Cochise , two siblings, Buddy Gerald and Julia Shirley, sister-in-law Helen Hendershot, and brother-in-law George Ryan.
Visitation will be held 9:30 - 10:30 am Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A Celebration of Life for Jane will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Bill Miller officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established, contributions may be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.
