Joan Elizabeth Hunold, 91 years, of Montrose, Iowa died Saturday, April 12, 2025 at The Kensington, Fort Madison, Iowa. She was born March 3, 1934 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Mertens) Nichting. She married Harold R. Hunold on June 9, 1953 and the couple started their life together farming northeast of West Point, Iowa. They raised three children there, David, Jean, and Patricia. In 1972, they moved the family to Montrose where Joan and her family operated farm supply and grain marketing businesses. Joan was an active volunteer for the Montrose Community, including tending to the flower gardens and the Soldier's Circle of the Montrose Cemetery. She was a member of the Montrose Historical Society, Montrose Riverfront Inc. and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Montrose.
She is survived by one son, David (Michele) Hunold of Keokuk, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Kent) Dobson and Patricia (Mark) Miller all of Montrose; one sister, Clare Anderson of California; four grandchildren: Jessica (Bryan) Humphrey, Amanda (Thomas) Older, Bryan (Ashley) Dobson and Alicia (Brian) Ortner; six great grandchildren: Braeden and Jace Ortner, Sawyer Rhoades, Greyson Dobson, Elizabeth and Addison Older; five sisters-in-law: Marlene Nichting, Irma Burch, Anita Hunold, Betty Hunold, and Shirley Hunold; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant brother, Joseph, one brother, Harold, and one sister, Barbara Bentler.
A Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Visitation will follow and continue until a Christian Wake Service begins at 6:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 pm Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Montrose, with Reverend Gary Beckman as Celebrant. Burial will be at the Montrose Cemetery, Montrose. A memorial has been established for the Montrose Township Historical Society.
