Obituary

John D Hogan, 91 years, of Niota, Illinois died at 9:17 pm Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the Donnellson Health Center, Donnellson, Iowa. He was born February 25, 1921 at Niota, Illinois, a son of John Daniel and Florence Amelia (Boeddeker) Hogan. On February 14, 1942, he married Mildred M. Gervler at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fort Madison, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1996.

He was a farmer. For a short time, he was a sub mail carrier for rural Niota. For 38 years, he was the Road Commissioner for Pontoosuc Township. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, attached to the Signal Corp. of Army Air Corp. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison and the Knights of Columbus, Nauvoo, Illinois. He was also a member Eagles Club and a lifelong member of the Moose Club in Fort Madison, Iowa. He loved dancing at the Moose Club on Saturday night, playing cards with friends and spending time with his loving family and friends.

He is survived by three sons: Robert (wife Nikki) Hogan, of Donnellson, Iowa; John "Jake" (wife Sandy) Hogan, of Niota, Illinois and Roger (wife Karen) Hogan, of Niota, Illinois; four daughters: Karen Simpson, of Nauvoo, Illinois; Nancy (husband Craig) Todd, of Dallas City, Illinois; Julie (husband Larry) Holmes, of Montrose, Iowa and Denise (husband Bryan) Allen, of Niota, Illinois; special friend, Ruby Ried, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one brother, Bernard Hogan, of Niota, Illinos; four sisters: Mary Elizabeth Scheetz, of Nauvoo, Illinois; Cleta (husband Kenny) Beimer, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Cecelia (husband Dick) Richards, of Danville, Iowa; Martha Galbraith, of Burlington, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded by his parents, wife, one brothers, George and three sisters: Alberta, Irene and Margaret.

Friends may call after 2:00 pm Friday November 16, 2012 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday November 16, 2012 with a Christian Wake Service at 5:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Saturday November 17, 2012 at the Holy Family Parish, Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Madison, Iowa, with Father Mark Spring as celebrant. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. Memorial contributions have been established for the Niota Fire Department and the Iowa Hospice. Contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel or at the church during the service.
