John Hoadley Standefer Sr., 73 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 9:25 pm Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.

He was born May 25, 1937 at Marshalltown, Iowa, a son of Joe M. and Lorene (Hoadley) Standefer.
On August 31, 1963, he married Mary Higgins at Des Moines, Iowa.

John was a CPA and retired as the Controller at Elmhurst Hospital, Chicago, Illinois.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was of the Christian faith. He was a die hard Cubs fan, as well as a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Bulls. He also enjoyed coaching his children in youth sports.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Standefer, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one daughter, Jeanie Standefer (Alan Schmoldt), of Oakwood Hills, Illinios; three sons: John H. Jr. (wife Stephannee) Standefer, of Bartlett, Illinois; James W. (wife Noreen) Standefer, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Jack J (wife Betsy) Standefer, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one brother, James Earl Standefer, of St. Croix, Minnesota; one sister, Joan Standefer, of Lafayette, Colorado; six grandchildren: Jasmine, Jade, Savannah, Aaron, Nicholas, and Josh; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack Standefer.

VISITATION / FUNERAL TIME / DATE / PLACE: Family will greet from 9:00 - 10:00 am Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Rev. David Wilkening, officiating. Burial will be at Keokuk National Cemetery, with full military rites at graveside.
A memorial has been established for Alzheimer Association Greater Illinois Chapter, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
