Joseph James “J.J.” Nichting, 68, passed away on September 25, 2026. Born October 6, 1957, J.J. grew up in Pilot Grove, Iowa, the son of Sylvan Joseph and Joan Marie (Holtkamp) Nichting.

J.J. graduated from Marquette High School before earning an accounting degree from Creighton University and a law degree from the University of Iowa. He worked in residential real estate, homebuilding, and property development in the La Jolla and San Diego areas of Southern California. He also helped his dad in the J.J. Nichting Company for 10 years.

He was active in several community and professional organizations, serving as president of La Jolla Meals on Wheels, La Jolla Sunrise Rotary, All Hallows Parish Council, and the La Jolla Brokers Association. He also served as a director of the San Diego Association of Realtors.

J.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvan and Joan Nichting. Survivors include his sister, Sylvia (Robert) Wetta, and brothers, Thomas (Janet) Nichting and Michael (Heather) Nichting, along with extended family and friends. 

A private family burial will be held at a later date at the St. James Cemetery, St. Paul, Iowa.
