Obituary

LaVern Rollin Haffner, 85 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 9:10 AM Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born September 4, 1929 at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, a son of Glenn Harold and Bernice Clara (Freuh) Haffner. On July 2, 1955, he married Patricia Culbertson at Fort Madison, Iowa.

LaVern lived most of his life in Fort Madison, and was a 1950 graduate of Fort Madison High School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He worked 36 years as a lineman for "Ma Bell", otherwise known as Northwestern Bell and US West. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Eagles. He was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Wever. He had a passion for Antique Gas Engines and was a member of the Southeast Iowa Antique Gas Engine Club. He was a collector of many other antiques. LaVern had a servant's heart and was always willing to help others.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Haffner, of Fort Madison, Iowa; two sons, Scott (wife Polly) Haffner, of Richmond, Texas and Jay Haffner, of Coralville, Iowa; three grandchildren: Lauren, Brett, and Carly Haffner; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, LaMarr Haffner.

Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. His family will greet friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A Memorial Service will follow and be held at 11:00 am Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the funeral home, with Pastor Cheryl Simpson officiating. Burial will be at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa with full military rites conducted by the Fort Madison Veteran's Honor Guard. A memorial has been established, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
