Margaret accepted Christ into her life at an early age. Until she took her last breath, she was a firm believer in God and his promise of everlasting life. Her favorite thing to say was, "I know from where my strength comes."

Margaret Jane Derrick was born June 24, 1922 at Agnes and William Pitts Sr. in Charlotte, North Carolina. At an early age, her family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In 1940, she met and married Sherman Derrick. To that union seven children were born. Margaret and Sherman relocated to Fort Madison, Iowa. Due to an accident that disabled Sherman, Margaret was left the sole provider for her 7 children. Margaret worked hard for her children who were her pride and joy. She did domestic work and also worked for Breck Company. Margaret was a very compassionate and active person, always helping someone or making herself available to help anyone in need. She was an active member of the NAACP and the community. Any one who knew her would describe her as confident, feisty and helpful. Aside from helping others, she loved to bake and cook. Her cooking, homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and baking will be missed.

After becoming too ill to care for herself, Margaret moved to California in 2008. She was called home May 20, 2010. She is preceded in death by her husband Sherman Sr., daughter, Norma; son, Sherman Jr.; brother, William; and 5 sisters: Rececca, Mattie, Ola Mae, Fannie, and Agnes.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons: Thomas (Shirley), of Waukegan, Illinois; Larry (Mary), of Simi Valley, California; Victor, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Anthony (Sharon) Skokie, Illinois; one daughter, Patricia (Charles), of Long Beach, California; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends and her extended Galbreath family.
