Mark S. Menke, 87 years, of West Point, Iowa and formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died Monday morning, November 24, 2025 at his home. He was born June 30, 1938 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a son of Joseph W. and Louise (Mohrfeld) Menke. On December 1, 1962, he married Helen Louise Fritz at East Pleasant Plain, Iowa.
Mark had been a lifelong resident of the area. He worked for the Iowa State Penitentiary as a Senior Correctional Officer, retiring in 2002 after 40 years of service. For 20 years he served as president of the AFSCME, local Union #2989, and served 8 years on the Council 61 Board. He was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard and a member of the American Legion Holtz-Geers Post 668 at West Point. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of West Point; four children: Larry (Tiffany) Menke of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Darrell (Laura) Menke of Hillsboro, Iowa; twins, Emily (Randy) Welding of West Point, Iowa and Kimberly Menke (Joe Galvin) of Dubuque, Iowa; four sisters: Betty Merschman, JoAnn Landers, Cathy (Larry) Holtkamp, and Mary Jo Koller; nine grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Carl Menke, Robert "Peanuts" Menke, and David Menke; seven sisters: Marcella Kempker, Doris Kempker, Floreen Fuerman, Delores Bohnenkamp, Miriam Holtkamp, Connie Conrad and Vera Evans.
Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. The family will greet friends from 9:30 - 10:30 am Saturday, November 29, 2025 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with a Memorial Service to follow and begin at 10:30 am Saturday at the funeral home, with Reverend Gary Beckman officiating.
A private family burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison.
Friends are invited to join the family for a meal the West Point American Legion following the services in Fort Madison.
A memorial has been established for the West Point Fire and Rescue and Holy Trinity Catholic Schools Daycare, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
