Merle Hasenclever, 95 years, of Denmark, Iowa died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday July, 19, 2014 at The Madison, Fort Madison, Iowa. Merle Hasenclever was born on May 17, 1919 to Francis and Mary (Grossman) Hasenclever near New London, Iowa. On October 8, 1944 he married Betsey Anne Timpe.
He graduated from Denmark Academy High School and attended Iowa State University. He spent the important years of his life on the family farm near Denmark, managing it for over 50 years. His life long interest was agriculture, and he always had an active interest in the Lee County Extension Service and Lee County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Penn City Singers and Lions Club. He served on the Lee County zoning commission, was a school board member for the Denmark School, and was a life long member of Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ where he was the oldest living Deacon, and also served as a Trustee, Sunday School teacher and choir member.
He is survived by his wife, Betsey and three daughters: Frances Smith of Houston, Texas; Miriam Hasenclever of Columbia, Missouri; Rebecca Hasenclever Saice (husband Dan) of Waterloo; three grandchildren: Miriam (husband Jeff) Mueller of Portland, Oregon; Jeremy Smith of Seattle, Washington; Chelsea Hasenclever of Columbia, Missouri; and one great-grandchild: Eleanor Mueller of Portland, Oregon and nieces and nephews. His parents and one brother, Herbert, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ, Denmark, Iowa, with Reverend Chad Savage officiating. Burial will be at the Denmark Cemetery, Denmark, Iowa. A memorial has been established for Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ and Juvenile Diabetes Association, contributions may be made at the church during the service or at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.
