Michael Fred Ebert, 67 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 10:40 pm Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. He was born December 20, 1945 at Keokuk, Iowa, a son of Fred Eldon and Josephine Edith (Bollin) Ebert. On December 12, 1970, he married Sharon Sportsman at Fort Madison, Iowa. She survives.
Michael was a graduate of Nauvoo-Colusa High School, and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a buyer for home improvement centers while living in Scottsdale, Arizona; San Antonio, Texas, and Norcross, Georgia. He and Sharon moved back to the Fort Madison area in 1992. For 12 years, he worked at Jacks and later Shopko. He was of the Catholic faith. He was active with the Boy Scouts for years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, watching racing and sports, especially the Chicago Bears, Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ebert, of Fort Madison, Iowa; mother and step-father, Josephine and Robert Holton, of Memphis, Missouri; three sons: Brian (Christmas) Ebert, of Gilbert, Arizona; Jeremy Ebert, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Matthew (Laura) Ebert, of Burlington, Iowa; two brothers, Daniel (Eve) Ebert, of Downing, Missouri and Brad (Rhonda) Ebert, of Downing, Missouri; one sister, Cindy (Larry) Dixon, of Lancaster, Missouri; sisters and brother-in-law: Priscilla Sportsman Nelson, of Phoenix, Arizona; Janice Sportsman, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and David Sportsman, of Fort Madison, Iowa; seven step-brothers; three grandchildren: Ash, Daniele, and Joey; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and father and mother-in-law, Evans and Juanita Sportsman.
His body has been cremated. His family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 am Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. A memorial service will follow and be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Father Mark Spring, officiating. Burial with full military rites will be at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. A memorial has been established, and contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.
