Obituary

Michael Steven Hein, 74 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 9:40 pm Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa. He was born December 24, 1937 at Bremerton, Washington a son of Steven Holman and Katherine Pauline (Goerger) Hein. On May 19, 1962, he married Terry Johanna Schachel at Washington D.C.

He had 20 years of service with the United States Navy, submarine service, retiring as Senior Chief. In 1970, while aboard the USS Queenfish, he flew the Iowa flag at the North Pole and later presented it to the Governor of Iowa. Following retirement, he worked in the defense industry for Emerson Electric, St. Louis, Missouri and Westinghouse, Cleveland, Ohio. Eventually he retired from the United States Postal Service, Seattle, Washington. He moved to Fort Madison in 2004. He was a 50 year and life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Fort Madison Lodge # 374. He was also a member of the VFW; Fleet Reserve; a life member of USSVI, Seattle base; and was inducted into the Holland Club in 2007. He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed golfing, baseball, and being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Hein, of Fort Madison, Iowa; two daughters, Laura Hein, of Fort Madison, Iowa and Hope (husband David) Russell, of Montville, Ohio; two brothers, Darrell (wife Linda) Hein, of Washington and Gerard (wife Nicole) Calabrese, of Kent, Washington; lifelong friend, J.A. "Scotty" McDonald, of Portand, Oregon; six grandchildren: Monica, Alyssa, Sadie, Brianna, Jesse Michael, and Joseph; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and step father, A.E. "Kelly' Calabrese.

His body has been cremated. His family will greet friends from 9:30 - 10:30 am Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Barr Memorial Chapel. Services will begin at 10:30 am at the Barr Memorial Chapel and will include the Elks Memorial Service, a memorial service with Rev. John Simpson, officiating, and will conclude with full military rites conducted by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.
