Michael Lance May, 61 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 1:40 PM Monday, May 20, 2013 at his home. He was born February 16, 1952 at Sacramento, California, a son of Edward Eugene and Mary Catherine (Wilkerson) May. He married Carol Pohlpeter.
Mike moved to Fort Madison in 1975. He worked as a correctional officer at the Iowa State Penitentiary, retiring in 2010. He was past president of AFSCME Local 2989. He liked to read, work on computers, do wood working and carpentry. He loved listening to music, was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, most of all he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Carol May, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one daughter, Angela (husband Creadell) Williams, of Coralville, Iowa; one son, Jeremy (wife Kimbel) May, of San Antonio, Texas; six brothers: Robert (wife Linda) May, of Madison, Illinois; William (wife Daron) May, of Palmyra, Wisconsin; Carl (wife Robin) May, of Sacramento, California; Joseph May, of Oklahoma; Stephen May, of Indianola, Iowa; and Allen May, of Madison, Illinois; three sisters: Karen (husband Joseph) Votoupal, of Alton, Illinois; Priscilla May, of Madison, Illinois; Cindy May, of California; four grandchildren: Imani, Javonte, Kaia and Livia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Roy May, one niece and one great nephew.
Per his wishes, the body of Mr. May has been cremated. His family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Wednesday May 22, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. The Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday May 23, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel. Ellen Mumpower will officiate. Services will conclude at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the Make A Wish Foundation, contributions may be made during visitation or on the day of the service.
