Milton Carl Bergthold, 94 years, of Keokuk, Iowa and formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 7:30 pm Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the River Hills Village, Keokuk, Iowa. He was born September 14, 1918 at Montrose, Iowa, a son of Simon and Ellen (Trump) Bergthold. On July 6, 1947, he married Faye Krebill at the Donnellson Mennonite Church, Donnellson, Iowa. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2013.
Milton grew up on the family farm and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II as a dental laboratory technician. He worked for Dupont for 31 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the former Santa Fe United Methodist Church and was active with the United Methodist Men. He served on the board of the Fort Madison Senior Citizens Club, was a member of RSVP, and was the 1992 Senior Volunteer of the year. Milton and Faye enjoyed square dancing and gardening together. They also loved to travel and visited all 50 states. Milton enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by three daughters: Nancy (husband Michael) Davenport, of Robins, Iowa; Martha (husband Carl) Pitts, of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas; Bettie (husband David) Burch, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one son, Ron (wife Gwyn) Bergthold, of Nashville, Tennessee; ten grandchildren: Jenny Glad, Benjamin Davenport, David Davenport, James Davenport, Joseph Burch, Jacob Burch, Cara Bergthold, Cali Huber, Carly Bergthold, and Caleb Bergthold; 10 great grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Marvin Bergthold, and one sister Lois Young.
Visitation will be from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 pm Monday, September 2, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. The funeral service will follow beginning at 1:00 pm Monday, September 2, 2013 all at the Barr Memorial Chapel. Reverend Jim Luder will officiate. Burial with full military rites will be at 9:30 am Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for Hospice of Central Iowa, and contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.
