Richard Harold "Dick" Pohlpeter, 81 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died at 3:52 pm Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born July 29, 1930 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a son of Raymond & Myrtle (Miller) Pohlpeter. On October 11, 1952, he married Lois Mary Morrett at Fort Madison, Iowa. She preceded him in death on November 6, 2011.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Fort Madison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He retired from the Iowa State Penitentiary after 36 years of service, where he worked as a guard and as Industries Supervisor. He obtained his GED in his later years. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, where he was Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Church Board, Youth Group Leader, Sunday School teacher, and Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of Order of the Arrow at Camp Eastman and was a former Mason. He enjoyed camping, watching NASCAR, and was active with his grandkids and their activities.
Survivors include, one son, Dale (wife Gerry) Pohlpeter, of Fort Madison, Iowa; four daughters: Rebecca "Becky" (husband Richard) Baker, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Carol (husband Mike) May, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Lorrie (husband John) Bird, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Ellen (husband Curt) Mumpower, of Quincy, Illinois; one brother: Larry (wife Frances) Pohlpeter, of Oklahoma; five sisters: Mary Lou Fairlie, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sylvia Pohlpeter, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Carmen Pohlpeter, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Connie (husband Robert) Bunker, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Peggy Pohlpeter, of Fort Madison, Iowa; ten grandchildren: B.J., Jessi, Adam, David, Amanda, Angie, Jeremy, Yvonne, Heather, and Abbie; ten great grandchildren: Madison, Mason, Caroline, Imani, Javonte, Kaia, Livia, Olivia, Layne, and Kyle; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, 4 brothers: Ray, Rolland, Paul & Royce and two sisters: Betty Glassford and Shirley Black.
Friends may call after 1:00 pm Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, where his family will meet friends from 3:00 - 5:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, February 6, 2012 at the First Christian Church, Fort Madison, Iowa, with Reverend John Simpson, officiating. Burial with full military rites at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. A memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel or at the church on the day of the service.
