Richard H. "Dick" Smith, 86 years, of Danville, Iowa died at 6:12 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa. He was born July 18, 1925 at Solon, Iowa, a son of John and Lucille V. (Cavanaugh) Smith. On August 15, 1958, he married Mary C. (Cooper) Harris at Monmouth, Illinois. She preceded him in death in 2001.

Dick worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, retiring after 35 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed reading, taking drives through the county, traveling, and mowing with his John Deere lawnmower. He was a true Democrat and was a University of Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan.

He is survived by a two daughters, Wanda Smith, of West Point, Iowa and Mary Lou Oliver, of Burlington, Iowa; one son, Lloyd Harris, of Windfield, Iowa; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his best friend Spot. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother Edward "Ted" Smith, one sister, Virginia (Smith) Penington, three grandsons, one son, Leon Harris and his loyal friend Benji.

Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, West Point, Iowa where the family will meet friends from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, with Reverend Eis, officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
