Obituary

Robert John Bonar, 93, of Denmark, Iowa died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Kensington, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born May 30, 1928, a son of Cecil John and Inez (Henderson) Bonar. On March 28, 1948, he married Virginia Hasenclever. They were married 73 years and had three children: John, Jane, and Julie.

Robert was a 1946 graduate of Denmark Academy High School. He was a lifelong farmer. He was a volunteer fireman with the Denmark Fire and Rescue, was on the fire board, and was a past Fire Chief. Robert was on the board of directors with the Farmers Savings Bank. He was a member of the Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ. And for many years, Robert and Virginia enjoyed square dancing.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Bonar of Denmark; three children: John (DeAnne) Bonar of Denmark; Jane (Bill) Block of Wever, Iowa; and Julie (Brian) Helling of Burlington, Iowa; two siblings, Betty Pumphrey of Denmark and Harold (Nadine) Bonar of Wever; grandchildren: Breana (Eric) Houtz, Brandon (Natalie) Bonar, Braxton Block, Abby (Matt) Straube, and Ely Helling; great grandchildren: Zane, Zikayla, Braxton Jr., Gracie, Griffin, Gwen, and Corbin; step-great grandchildren, Zac and Zoey; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Nora Pitts, Wanda Riddle, and Lucille Sweeney.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 am Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. A funeral service will follow and begin at 11:00 am at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Chad Savage officiating. Masks are suggested. The funeral service will be recorded and can be viewed after the service with Robert's obituary at www.barrmemorialchapel.com. Private family burial will be at Denmark Cemetery, Denmark. A memorial has been established for Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ and Denmark Fire and Rescue, contributions may be mailed to or left at Barr Memorial Chapel, 1919 Ave F, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627.
