Robert David Fahey, Sr, 89, of Lakeland, Florida, formerly of Fort Madison, died on Friday morning, October 18, 2013 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Florida. He was born on November 13, 1923 to Richard W and Dorothy Rauenbuehler Fahey in Fort Madison, Iowa. On November 24, 1948, he married Beverly L. Kern at St. John's Catholic Church in Burlington, Iowa.
A public school teacher with 38 years experience, he served 32 of those years at the Fort Madison High School where he taught English, speech and humanities. He was known by his students as "Uncle Bob". Prior to teaching in Fort Madison, he taught one year in Lamont, Iowa and five years in Chariton, Iowa. While at FMHS he was the "Voice of the Bloodhounds" at all home football games for 25 years. He founded the speech team, directed multiple theater productions, and coordinated the
Upward Bound program. Upon retirement, he did free-lance writing, including authoring a book, Sound Recall, published in 1995.
A 1943 graduate of Fort Madison High School, he was a combat infantry veteran of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II where he earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Following military service, he graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College. He was a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, the 76th Infantry Division Association and was a founding member of the 76th Division Museum. He was a member of Sigma Tau Delta honorary English fraternity,
and American Legion Post 82, Fort Madison.
He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the former St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fort Madison, where his great grandparents were founding members in 1840. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Fort Madison Cattermole Library, was a director of the North Lee County Historical Museum, served on the Preservation Commission and as president of the Fort Madison Education Association. He was a charter member of the Old Settlers Park Association and served as president. He was a lifelong Cubs and Notre Dame football fan.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Jane Fahey, of Otisfield, Maine and Lakeland, Florida, two grandchildren and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, R. David Fahey, Jr., a grandson, and his brother, Wilfred R. Fahey.
Per his wishes to be cremated and buried at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison, private services will be held at a later date.
