Roy Wesley Gully, Jr., 60 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 1:50 am Sunday, March 18, 2012 at his home. He was born November 1, 1951 at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, to the union of Roy Wesley, Sr. and Joycelyn (Pinkard) Gully, both deceased. He was the second of 16 children. Roy grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. Roy professed his love for Christ and was baptized at the Holy Ghost Church of God In Christ in St. Louis, Missouri in 1961. He attended Sumner High School. He acquired his GED at Southeastern Community College in 1980. Roy has three children from his previous union. He has one child and two step children with the love of his life, Ylinda, who he married on April 4, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
On January 30, 1969, Roy enlisted in the US Army, serving as Sgt. in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. He worked at Grace Sign and Manufacturing Co. from 1973 to 1977 in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1978, he moved his family to Burlington, Iowa, where he worked at Lehigh-Leopold. In 1980, he started work at the Iowa State Penitentiary, earning the title of Senior Correctional Officer and then Supervisor I. He retired as a correctional officer in December 2008. Roy enjoyed watching movies, sports, and going to games. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Missouri Tigers. He loved going to the beach, looking out on the ocean, traveling to new places and visiting with his family and friends all across the United States.
He had a passion for his family, especially his grandchildren. He was known to his family as "Mr. G." or "The God Father." Roy wants all his family to know that he is joining his ancestors on the other side and will be waiting to welcome you all home when your time comes.
Roy leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife of 22 years , Ylinda (Riles) Gully; and his children: Roy Wesley (Donna) Gully, III and children: Raina, Roy IV, Luke, and Landon, of Galesburg, Illinois; Valerie J. Gully, and daughters: Faticia and Neimone, of Fort Madison, Iowa; William Gully, and daughter, Kamrynn, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Jaime (Joshua) Brown, and sons: Nathan and Evan, of Hinesville, Georgia; two step-children: Amina (Michael) Jones, and daughters, Michaela and Alaina, of Jerusalem, Israel and Steven K. Minner, Sr., and children: Iry, Imonie, Steven Jr., Aja, Manaysha, Jayla, Sameah, and Olivia, of Burlington, Iowa; his siblings: Jennifer (Louis) White; Leroy (Katherine) Gully; Johnny (Yvonne) Gully; Cecil "Ricky" Burnett; Jeffrey Lloyd; Darren (Gloria) Gully; Maria Range; Terry Aron; Angela Gully; Andrea Gully; Marisa Gully; Michelle White; Marlon Gully; Anthony Gully; Ronald Calvin; Eric Gully; Robin Booker; and Christopher (Angela) Gully; brother-in-law, James Holmes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Valerie Gully, Rowena Gully and Sonya Holmes.
Per his wishes, the body has been cremated. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, March 23, 2012 at the St. Peters Cemetery, 2101 Lucas and Hunt Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63121. A memorial has been established for Center Treatment Centers of America.
