Obituary

Wandalea Ammer, 92, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died Tuesday, August 26, 2025 in Des Moines, Iowa.  She was born December 3, 1932 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a daughter of Gilbert and Beulah (Gillenwater) Andrews.  On June 7, 1953, she married Melvin E. Ammer at the First Christian Church, Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was a 1950 graduate of Fort Madison High School.  She was a homemaker, and a former member of King's Daughters, Princess Circle.  She is a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and was honored as Deaconess Emeritus, sang in the choir for many years, and held several positions within the church.  Wandalea was a talented quilter and seamstress.  She enjoyed playing Rummikub and cards.

She is survived by two sons: John (Theresa) Ammer, of New Haven, Indiana; Dan Ammer (Kelly Due, fiance), of Sacramento, California; two daughters: Suzette (Randy) Hart, of Johnston, Iowa; Sandra (Todd) Fonkert, of Waverly, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Eric Fonkert, Ryan Fonkert, Laura (Fonkert) Schwab, Chris Hart, Cameron Hart, Fr. Michael Ammer, Kristen (Ammer) Bradtmueller, Nicholas Ammer, Austin Ammer, Tanner Ammer and Keaton Ammer; and eleven great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Her family will greet friends 9:30 - 10:30 am Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.  Her Memorial Service will follow and begin at 10:30 am at the funeral home with Rev. Leslie Dalstra, officiating.  Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.  A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (P.O.
